The number of bricks is calculated by dividing the wall's area (with a margin) by the area covered by one brick, mortar joint included. For a 10×2.5 m wall with a standard 22×6.5 cm brick and a 10 mm joint, you'll need about 1,522 bricks.

Explanation

Unlike concrete blocks, whose standard dimensions (20×20×50 cm) are fairly uniform from one manufacturer to another — see our concrete block calculator, which applies the trade rule of "10 blocks per m²" — bricks come in a wide variety of formats: standard hollow brick, solid brick, thin facing brick, insulating monomur brick. A fixed-rate trade rule would therefore only make sense for one of these formats. This calculator works differently: it directly calculates the area covered by one brick, mortar joint included (length + joint, multiplied by height + joint, converted to meters), then divides the wall's total area by that value. With the default dimensions (standard 22×6.5 cm brick, 10 mm joint), this geometric calculation gives about 58 bricks per square meter, a value that lines up well with the range generally cited (58 to 63 bricks/m² depending on the source) for this brick format. Joint thickness has a non-negligible effect on the final result: a thicker joint slightly increases the area covered by each brick, so it reduces the number of bricks needed, and vice versa. Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't this calculator just give a fixed number of bricks per m²?

Because brick dimensions vary too much from one format to another (standard brick, facing brick, monomur brick) for a single rate to be reliable in every case — professional sources themselves cite fairly wide ranges (58 to 63 bricks/m² for the standard format alone). Calculating directly from your brick's actual dimensions gives a more accurate result, whatever format you choose.

What joint thickness should I use if I don't know it yet?

10 mm (1 cm) is the most commonly recommended joint thickness for standard brick masonry, a good default benchmark. Some products, like thin facing brick, use thinner joints (5 mm or less) for a different aesthetic — check the manufacturer's spec sheet if you've already chosen your brick.

Does this calculation assume a solid wall with no openings?

Yes, this calculator gives the number of bricks for the total area entered. If the wall has doors or windows, subtract their area from the total length × height before entering it, so you don't order extra bricks for areas that won't be bricked.
