To convert a frequency, it is first brought to hertz (Hz) and then converted into the desired unit. Example: a processor clocked at 2.4 GHz runs at 2,400 MHz, or 2,400,000,000 cycles per second.
Explanation
Hertz (Hz) measures a number of cycles (or oscillations, or revolutions) per second: 1 Hz equals one cycle per second. Its decimal multiples (kilohertz, megahertz, gigahertz, terahertz) follow the standard International System prefixes, used for example for a processor's clock speed (in GHz) or a radio wave's frequency (in MHz). Revolutions per minute (RPM) expresses the same idea of repetition over time, but per minute rather than per second, and is mainly used in mechanics (the rotation speed of an engine, a hard drive, a centrifuge): 1 Hz equals exactly 60 RPM, since there are 60 seconds in a minute. Frequently asked questions
Why does 3,000 RPM equal exactly 50 Hz?
Because there are 60 seconds in a minute: dividing a number of revolutions per minute by 60 gives the number of revolutions per second, which is the frequency in hertz. 50 Hz also happens to be the frequency of alternating current in Europe (60 Hz in the United States), which is why some simple electric motors naturally spin around 3,000 RPM (or 3,600 RPM on the US grid) when plugged directly into mains power.
What's the difference between frequency and angular velocity?
Frequency (in Hz or RPM) counts a number of complete revolutions per unit of time, with no angle unit. Angular velocity (in radians per second) directly measures the angle covered per unit of time, which makes it more practical for certain physics calculations. Why is a processor's frequency advertised in GHz?
A modern processor runs several billion clock cycles per second, a figure that's far more readable expressed in gigahertz (billions of Hz) than in raw hertz. A 2.4 GHz processor therefore performs 2,400,000,000 cycles every second — the exact number of instructions actually executed, however, also depends on the processor's architecture, not just its frequency.
