Explanation

Unlike a concrete block, whose consumption per m² is standardized by its fixed dimensions, skim coat consumption varies greatly depending on its formulation: technical sources indicate consumption ranging from 300 to 350 grams per m² per millimeter of thickness for some fine skim coats, up to 1 to 1.5 kg per m² per millimeter for other thicker or denser formulations. There is no single reliable value applicable to all products: the manufacturer's technical sheet remains the most reliable source for the exact consumption of the chosen product. This calculator offers an adjustable slider (defaulting to 1 kg/m²/mm, a common median value) rather than an imposed value, to be adjusted according to the product actually used. A loss margin (10% in common use) is added to compensate for product left on the trowel, in the bucket, or lost during application.

How many coats of skim coat are generally needed?

This depends on the condition of the surface: a single thin coat may be enough on an already even surface, while a more uneven surface may need two coats (a rough leveling coat followed by a finer finishing coat). In that case, calculate the quantity for each coat separately, with its own thickness, then add the results.

Does this quantity include primer or undercoat?

No, this calculator only estimates the skim coat itself. A primer or bonding undercoat, sometimes recommended before applying the skim coat depending on the surface type, is calculated separately based on the coverage rate stated on its own packaging.
