Water Softener Salt Dosage Calculator

The salt dose per regeneration is calculated with resin volume (L) × 150 g/L. For a softener with 10 L of resin, you need about 1500 g of salt per cycle, or about 16.7 regenerations per 25 kg bag.

Explanation

A water softener retains the calcium and magnesium responsible for water hardness on an ion-exchange resin, which needs to be regularly regenerated with salt to restore its softening capacity. The amount of salt needed for each regeneration depends directly on the unit's resin volume (not its soft-water production capacity): a benchmark widely cited by manufacturers and installers puts this consumption at around 150 grams of salt per liter of resin per regeneration cycle. A softener with a small resin tank (8 to 10 L, typical for a household of 2-3 people) therefore consumes noticeably less salt per cycle than a larger model (20 to 30 L, for a bigger home or very hard water). The frequency of regenerations, meanwhile, depends mainly on water hardness and the volume of water used between two cycles: the harder the water, the more frequent the regenerations, and the higher the annual salt consumption ends up being, even at the same resin volume. Consistently using salt specifically made for softeners (tablets or blocks, high purity) rather than table salt or de-icing salt remains essential: impurities in non-compliant salt can prematurely clog the system and void the unit's warranty.

Example: a softener with 10 L of resin

Inputs

Resin volume: 10 L. Bag size: 25 kg.

Calculation

Dose per regeneration = 10 × 150 = 1500 g. Regenerations per bag = 25,000 ÷ 1500 ≈ 16.7.

Result

Each regeneration uses about 1500 g of salt, or about 16.7 cycles per 25 kg bag.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the salt dose depend on resin volume and not on water hardness?

Because regeneration restores the ion-exchange capacity of THE RESIN itself, a chemical process whose salt requirement depends on how much resin needs regenerating, not directly on the hardness of the water being treated. Water hardness instead affects how FREQUENTLY regenerations happen (very hard water saturates the resin faster, requiring more frequent cycles), and therefore the ANNUAL salt consumption, even though the dose per individual cycle stays tied to resin volume.

Can table salt be used instead of dedicated water softener salt?

No, this generally isn't recommended: table salt often contains impurities (anti-caking agents, iodine, minerals) that can prematurely clog the regeneration system and shorten the unit's lifespan. Dedicated softener salt (tablets or blocks) is purified specifically for this use, and using it is usually a condition of the manufacturer's warranty.

How do I know how many bags of salt to buy for the year?

First estimate the number of regenerations over the year, which depends on both water hardness AND the volume of water your household actually uses (see for example our shower water consumption calculator for one of the most significant sources of household water use), then divide that number by the number of regenerations a bag provides, calculated here. A commonly cited estimate for a household of four with moderately hard water is 100 to 150 kg of salt per year.
