Gross monthly salary is calculated as hourly rate × (weekly hours × 52 ÷ 12). For a full-time 35-hour week and a rate of €13/hour, this gives 151.67 monthly hours, for a gross monthly salary of €1,971.67 (€23,660 per year).

Explanation

In France, an employee's monthly salary is not calculated by simply multiplying the hourly rate by the number of hours in the current month (which varies between about 4 and 4.4 weeks depending on the month): the law requires monthly averaging, which smooths the salary onto a constant basis throughout the year. This basis is calculated as weekly hours × 52 weeks ÷ 12 months, which gives, for a standard full-time week of 35 hours, exactly 151.67 hours per month — the reference figure found on nearly all French pay slips, regardless of the actual number of working days in the month. This calculator applies the same method to any weekly duration (35h, 39h, part-time), not just the standard full-time week: the number of monthly hours changes proportionally, but the calculation principle stays the same. The result obtained is a gross salary, before deduction of employee social security contributions (pension, health insurance, unemployment insurance) that give the net salary actually paid — the difference between gross and net varies by status and sector, generally around 22 to 25% for a private-sector employee. For converting recurring amounts between daily, monthly, and annual bases more generally, see our daily, monthly, annual cost calculator.

Example: €13/hour at full-time 35h

Inputs

Gross hourly rate: €13/h. Weekly duration: 35h.

Calculation

Monthly hours = 35 × 52 ÷ 12 ≈ 151.67 h. Gross monthly salary = 13 × 151.67 ≈ €1,971.67. Gross annual salary = 1,971.67 × 12 = €23,660.

Result

This hourly rate corresponds to a gross monthly salary of about €1,971.67, or €23,660 per year.

Frequently asked questions

Why 151.67 hours and not a round number like 150 or 152?

Because this number comes directly from the legal calculation (35 × 52 ÷ 12 = 151.6666…, rounded to 151.67), which spreads exactly 52 weeks of 35 hours over 12 equal months. It's not an arbitrary approximation, but the mathematical consequence of wanting a constant monthly salary despite months of unequal length.

Does this calculation give a gross or net salary?

A gross salary, before deduction of employee social security contributions (pension, health insurance, unemployment insurance, CSG-CRDS). The net salary actually received is lower, generally around 22 to 25% less for a private-sector employee in France, this gap varying by status (manager or non-manager) and industry.

Does this calculation also apply to a part-time contract?

Yes, the same formula applies regardless of the weekly duration entered: for a part-time role of 20 hours per week, for example, monthly hours are calculated as 20 × 52 ÷ 12 ≈ 86.67 hours, following exactly the same principle as for full-time.
