The end-of-contract bonus is calculated with total gross pay received during the fixed-term contract × 10% (standard rate). For €20,000 of gross pay, the bonus amounts to €2,000.

Explanation

The end-of-contract bonus ("prime de précarité"), also called the fixed-term contract completion allowance, is owed to an employee at the end of a French fixed-term contract (CDD) to offset the precariousness of their situation compared to a permanent contract (CDI), under article L1243-8 of the French Labor Code. Its standard rate is 10% of the total gross pay received over the entire contract (base salary, bonuses, overtime, and paid-leave allowance included), but this rate can be reduced to 6% if an extended branch agreement or collective bargaining agreement provides for it, in exchange for the employee getting easier access to professional training. This bonus belongs to the same family of employment-law compensation as a permanent contract's statutory dismissal indemnity (based on seniority rather than a percentage of total pay) or the overtime pay calculator that applies during the contract itself: each targets a different moment or situation in an employment relationship. Note that several situations entirely rule out the right to this bonus: the CDD being converted into a CDI at its end, the employee refusing a CDI offered for the same or a similar position with at least equivalent pay, a seasonal CDD or a CDD signed with a student during school or university holidays, an early termination for the employee's serious misconduct, or an early termination initiated by the employee themselves outside the cases provided for by law.

Example: €20,000 of gross pay, standard rate

Inputs

Total gross pay received during the CDD: €20,000. Applicable rate: 10%.

Calculation

End-of-contract bonus = €20,000 × 10% = €2,000.

Result

This employee is owed a €2,000 end-of-contract bonus at the end of their fixed-term contract.

Frequently asked questions

When is the end-of-contract bonus paid?

The end-of-contract bonus is paid at the end of the contract, together with the final salary, and must appear on the payslip covering that last month worked. It is therefore never paid during the contract but only at its conclusion, once the total gross pay received is definitively known.

In which cases is the end-of-contract bonus not owed?

It is not owed if the fixed-term contract converts into a permanent contract at its end, if the employee refuses an equivalent permanent contract offered by the employer for the same position, if it's a seasonal fixed-term contract or one signed with a student during school holidays, in case of the employee's serious misconduct, or in case of early termination initiated by the employee themselves outside the legally provided cases (a new permanent job, notably). Any unused leave days at the end of the contract remain owed regardless of this bonus, and can be checked with our remaining paid leave calculator.

Why can the rate be reduced to 6%?

An extended branch agreement or collective bargaining agreement can provide for a reduced rate of 6% instead of the standard 10% rate, but only in exchange for specific guarantees offered to the employee regarding access to professional training, as expressly provided by article L1243-8 of the French Labor Code. This reduced rate remains the exception, not the general rule.
