Typing Speed Calculator

Typing speed is calculated with (number of characters ÷ 5) ÷ duration in minutes, the standard convention being that a "word" represents 5 characters. Typing 250 characters in 1 minute corresponds to a speed of 50 words per minute.
Explanation
Keyboard typing speed is measured in words per minute (WPM), but not by counting the actual words in the typed text: the convention universally adopted by typing speed tests counts every group of 5 characters (spaces included) as one standard "word." This convention allows typing speeds to be compared consistently, independent of the text actually entered (a text with short words shouldn't artificially inflate the score compared to a text with long words). As a benchmark, an average typing speed for a non-specialist user is generally between 30 and 40 words per minute, while a professional typist or a highly trained user often exceeds 70 to 80 words per minute, with typing speed records exceeding 200 words per minute under optimal conditions. In the opposite direction from typing, our reading time calculator estimates how long it takes to read a text rather than type it.
Example: 250 characters typed in 1 minute
Inputs
Characters typed: 250. Duration: 1 minute.
Calculation
Typing speed = (250 ÷ 5) ÷ 1 = 50 ÷ 1 = 50 words per minute.
Result
This typing speed is 50 words per minute.
Frequently asked questions
Why count 5 characters as a "word" instead of the actual words in the text?
Because average word length varies by text and language used, which would make scores incomparable from one test to another. By setting an arbitrary but universal convention (5 characters = 1 word, spaces included), the measured typing speed stays comparable regardless of the text typed.
What counts as a good typing speed?
A speed of 30 to 40 words per minute is considered decent for everyday use, 60 to 70 words per minute as fast, and above 80 to 100 words per minute as the level of a highly trained or professional typist. These benchmarks vary by source and don't account for error rate, a factor just as important as raw speed.
Does this calculation account for typing mistakes?
No, this calculator only measures raw speed from the total number of characters typed in the given time. Professional typing tests generally calculate a "net" speed, which penalizes uncorrected errors, in addition to the raw speed measured here.
Is typing speed related to keyboard security?
Not directly, but both are common keyboard-related metrics: this calculator measures how fast you type, while our password entropy calculator measures how hard a password is to guess. Neither one influences the other.
