Why does butterfly burn so many more calories than the other strokes?
Butterfly requires simultaneous, powerful coordination of the arms, torso, and legs on every stroke cycle (the characteristic whole-body undulation), making it the most demanding of the four codified strokes on both the muscular and cardiovascular systems. Few swimmers, even trained ones, can sustain this stroke over long continuous distances, which also explains why it's rarely swum for an entire session.
Do these MET values account for my technical level?
No, they assume a moderate pace and a reasonably efficient technique, with no further precision. A beginner swimmer, less technically efficient, often spends more energy to cover the same distance than an experienced swimmer, something this general MET-based estimate doesn't capture.
Is swimming more calorie-efficient than running?
At comparable perceived intensity, moderate freestyle swimming (6.0 MET) sits in a range comparable to moderate jogging, but is generally lower than more intense running.
