A sloped roof's real surface area is found by dividing the building's footprint by the cosine of the pitch angle. Example: for a 100 m² footprint and a 30° pitch, the roof's real surface area is about 115.47 m² — always greater than the footprint.

Explanation

A roof plane is a tilted rectangle, not a flat one: its real surface area is therefore always greater than the ground footprint it covers, seen from above. The steeper the pitch, the bigger this gap grows — a 45° roof has a real surface area about 41% greater than its footprint, versus only 15% for a 30° pitch. This difference is far from trivial: it's the roof's REAL surface area, never the footprint, that must be used to order tiles, a waterproofing membrane, or an underlayment, or the required quantities will be significantly underestimated. Frequently asked questions

Why is roof surface area always greater than the footprint?

Because a tilted roof plane covers more ground than its flat projection seen from above — the same geometric principle that makes a sloped ramp longer than the horizontal distance it covers. The steeper the pitch, the larger this gap between real surface and projected surface becomes.

Does this formula apply to a roof with several pitched sections?

This calculator handles one roof plane (a single pitch) at a time. For a roof with several sections at different pitches (a four-sided hip roof, for example), calculate the footprint and pitch of each section separately, then add the results together.

Should I subtract the area of roof windows (skylights)?

For an accurate order of tiles or slates, yes: subtract the area of roof openings from the total surface calculated here. Many roofers, however, keep a safety margin rather than precisely deducting small openings, to absorb waste and cuts.
