CO2 emissions from electricity consumption in France are calculated with consumption (kWh) × 40 g CO2eq/kWh, the full life-cycle carbon intensity of the French electricity mix (RTE source). For 3,500 kWh consumed over a year, that represents about 140 kg of CO2.

Explanation

France has one of the least carbon-intensive electricity supplies in Europe, thanks to a mix dominated by nuclear and renewable energy: direct emissions from production alone stood at about 20-22 g of CO2 per kWh in 2024-2025 according to RTE (Réseau de Transport d'Électricité, the official French grid operator), placing the country 2nd in Europe behind Norway, and about six times below the European Union average. This calculator, however, uses a slightly higher value, about 40 g CO2eq per kWh, which corresponds to the carbon intensity in full life-cycle analysis — a figure RTE itself considers more representative of the actual impact, since it includes not only the direct emissions from electricity production, but also the construction of infrastructure (power plants, wind and solar farms) and upstream fuel extraction. These two RTE figures (about 20 g for production alone, about 40 g in full life-cycle analysis) therefore do not contradict each other: they simply answer different calculation scopes. In both cases, this level remains far below that of most other European countries, whose electricity mix relies more heavily on gas and coal. Frequently asked questions

Why is French electricity so much less carbon-intensive than other European countries?

Mainly thanks to the very high share of nuclear power in the French electricity mix (generally around 65-70% of production), an electricity source that emits almost no CO2 during production, complemented by a growing share of renewable energy (hydro, wind, solar). Conversely, countries whose electricity mix relies more on gas or coal show a markedly higher carbon intensity, sometimes several hundred grams of CO2 per kWh.

Why doesn't this calculator directly use the 20 g CO2/kWh figure?

Because that figure only covers the direct emissions of electricity production, not the full life cycle (construction of power plants and infrastructure, upstream fuel extraction). RTE itself considers a figure of about 40 g CO2eq/kWh more representative of the actual impact of electricity consumption, and this is the value this calculator uses.

Does this calculation apply to electricity consumed in other countries?

No, the carbon intensity of electricity varies enormously from one country to another depending on the composition of its electricity mix (nuclear, renewable, gas, coal). This calculator specifically uses the French electricity mix; applying this same factor to consumption in another country would give an incorrect result, potentially off by a factor of 5 to 10 for countries whose electricity relies more heavily on fossil fuels.
