The number of days left in the year is calculated by counting the days between today and December 31. On January 1st of a 365-day year, 364 days remain; on June 15th, about 199 remain.
Explanation
This calculator simply counts the calendar days between today's date and December 31st of the same year, automatically accounting for leap years (366 days instead of 365, with an extra day added on February 29th every four years, except for century years not divisible by 400). It also calculates the percentage of the year already elapsed, a different way of visualizing the same information — useful for tracking progress toward an annual goal (budget, savings, resolutions) relative to the time remaining. Frequently asked questions
Is today's date counted in the days remaining?
No: the calculation measures the number of days BETWEEN today and December 31, not counting today itself. That's why, on December 31, the result shows 0 days remaining — it's the last day of the year, there are none left after it.
How are leap years accounted for?
Automatically: a leap year (divisible by 4, except century years not divisible by 400, like 1900) has 366 days instead of 365, with an extra February 29th. The calculation of the total number of days in the year adjusts itself based on the current year.
Why track the percentage of the year elapsed rather than just the days remaining?
The percentage is easier to compare to other progress figures also expressed as a percentage — the progress of an annual budget, a savings goal, or a reading plan, for example. A budget that's 60% spent while only 45% of the year has elapsed signals a spending pace that's too fast, an insight the number of days remaining alone doesn't give as directly.
