Gross to Net Salary Calculator (France)

In France, the estimated net salary before income tax is gross × 78% for a non-manager employee, or gross × 75% for a manager (cadre). A gross salary of €2,500 gives an estimated net of about €1,950 for a non-manager, or €1,875 for a manager.
Explanation
In France, the net salary is always lower than the gross salary shown on a contract or job offer, the difference corresponding to employee social security contributions withheld automatically (health insurance, pension, unemployment insurance, among others). These contributions average around 22% of gross salary for a non-manager employee and around 25% for a manager (cadre), mainly due to higher supplementary pension contributions for managers (AGIRC-ARRCO bracket 2) and a specific contribution to the APEC (the French executive employment association). This calculator therefore gives an average, approximate estimate: the exact rate varies depending on the applicable collective bargaining agreement, certain specific pay elements (overtime, tax-exempt bonuses), and other individual factors not covered by this simple average. An important point not to confuse: this result is the net salary BEFORE income tax, also called 'net before withholding'. The amount that actually lands in the bank account (the 'net paid') is even lower, once income tax withheld at source is deducted — see our debt-to-income ratio calculator for a related French payroll and finance topic. To then convert this monthly salary into an hourly or annual equivalent, see our hourly, monthly, annual salary calculator.
Example: gross salary of €2,500, non-manager status
Inputs
Gross salary: €2,500. Status: non-manager.
Calculation
Estimated net salary = 2,500 × 0.78 = €1,950. Estimated contributions = 2,500 − 1,950 = €550.
Result
This gross salary corresponds to an estimated net of about €1,950 before income tax.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a manager (cadre) have a lower net/gross ratio than a non-manager?
Mainly because managers contribute at a higher rate for their supplementary pension (bracket 2 of the AGIRC-ARRCO scheme, which applies to the portion of pay above the Social Security ceiling) and pay a mandatory contribution to the APEC (the French executive employment association), two contributions specific to manager status that don't exist, or exist differently, for a non-manager.
Does this result match the amount actually paid into my bank account?
No, this calculator gives the net salary BEFORE income tax withholding, an additional step that depends on each person's tax situation (household income, number of tax shares, other income). The amount actually paid into the bank account (the 'net paid') is therefore generally lower than this calculator's result, once this tax is withheld at source.
Why is this calculation only an average estimate?
The exact social contribution rate depends on the collective bargaining agreement applicable to the company, the pay bracket (some contributions only apply above or below certain thresholds), and specific pay elements (overtime, benefits in kind, bonuses). For an exact amount, only the employer's detailed pay slip is authoritative; this calculator gives a quick order of magnitude, not a contractual value.
