The bench press / squat ratio is calculated by dividing the bench press load by the squat load. A ratio around 0.7 to 0.8 is usually considered to reflect proportionate upper/lower body development.
Explanation
The squat and the bench press work very different muscle groups (the legs and glutes for one, the chest, shoulders, and triceps for the other), and it is natural for them to progress at different rates depending on each person's build and training history. Comparing the two via a simple ratio (bench press ÷ squat) gives a quick benchmark for spotting a marked imbalance: many strength coaches cite a range of about 0.7 to 0.8 as reflecting proportionate development, consistent with the strength standards usually published for each movement separately (the squat generally progresses faster in absolute terms than the bench press, since it engages larger muscle masses). **This benchmark is not, however, a clinically validated threshold**: individual build plays a major role (long femurs make the squat mechanically harder at the same load, while short arms favor the bench press), as does the discipline practiced and each lifter's own training history. A ratio that clearly departs from this range is not a problem in itself, but can flag a muscle group to prioritize if the goal is balanced development rather than a specific discipline. Frequently asked questions
What if my ratio is well above 0.8?
A high ratio means your bench press is relatively strong compared with your squat: this can reflect a build favorable to pressing (short arms, for example), a training history more focused on the upper body, or simply room to grow on the squat. This isn't necessarily a problem, unless the goal is balanced body development.
Is this ratio the same for men and women?
The coaching benchmarks cited generally do not distinguish between the sexes for this specific ratio, unlike absolute strength standards (expressed in kg or as multiples of body weight), which differ noticeably. The principle stays the same: comparing the proportion between the two movements rather than their absolute value.
Why is the squat almost always heavier than the bench press?
Because the squat engages much larger muscle groups (quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings) than the bench press (chest, shoulders, triceps), and the legs already support body weight every day, unlike the arms. A ratio close to 1 (both movements at equal load) is actually quite rare and most often signals either an exceptional bench press or a still underdeveloped squat.
