Explanation
The strength-to-weight ratio makes it possible to compare the relative strength of lifters of very different sizes, where directly comparing loads lifted in kilograms mechanically favors heavier people. A ratio of 1 means the load lifted equals body weight; a ratio of 2 means the load is double the body weight. This indicator is commonly used informally in weightlifting and powerlifting to give progress benchmarks per exercise (for example, lifting one's own body weight on the bench press, or twice one's body weight on the deadlift, are often cited as intermediate goals). What strength-to-weight ratio is considered good?
It depends heavily on the exercise, sex, training level, and build: there is no universal ratio to reach. Common informal benchmarks for an intermediate lifter include a ratio close to 1 on the bench press and close to 1.5 to 2 on the deadlift, but these figures vary a lot from person to person.
Why not just compare loads lifted in kilograms?
Because that mechanically favors heavier, taller people, who generally have greater absolute muscle mass, without this necessarily reflecting a better level of relative strength. The strength-to-weight ratio allows a fairer comparison between lifters of different sizes, or a consistent personal tracking method if body weight changes.
Is this ratio used in official strength competitions?
Powerlifting federations use more sophisticated formulas (such as the IPF GL coefficients or the older Wilks formula) that adjust performance according to body weight in a non-linear way, rather than a simple direct ratio. The strength-to-weight ratio nonetheless remains a simple benchmark widely used informally by lifters to track their own progress.
