Training volume (or "volume load") is a measure commonly used in strength training to quantify the total work done on a given exercise, by multiplying the number of sets by the number of reps per set and by the weight used. It lets you objectively compare two sessions with different structures: for example, 3 sets of 8 reps at 100 kg (2,400 kg of volume) represents less total work than 5 sets of 10 reps at 60 kg (3,000 kg), even though the weight per rep is lower in the second case. Volume is one of the levers used in training planning (alongside intensity and frequency) to progress over time, generally by increasing it gradually from week to week rather than in big jumps. This calculator applies to a single exercise with a constant weight across all sets; for an exercise where the weight changes from set to set (pyramid sets, for example), calculate and add up the volume of each set separately.

How do I use this calculation to track my progress over time?
By comparing the volume of the same exercise from one session to the next or one week to the next: an increase in total volume (through more reps, more sets, or a heavier weight) is a sign of improved work capacity, regardless of which of these three levers changed.
Does this calculation account for relative intensity (percentage of your 1RM)?
