VO2max can be estimated with no exercise test using the formula 15.3 × (max HR ÷ resting HR). For age 30 (estimated max HR of 187 bpm) and a resting HR of 60 bpm, the estimated VO2max is about 47.7 mL/kg/min.
Explanation
VO2max (maximal oxygen uptake) measures the maximum amount of oxygen the body can use during intense exercise, expressed in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (mL/kg/min): it's one of the best indicators of cardiovascular capacity and aerobic fitness. Measuring it precisely requires a lab exercise test with respiratory gas analysis, equipment not accessible to the general public. This calculator instead uses the heart rate ratio method (Uth, Sørensen, Overgaard, and Pedersen, 2004), which estimates VO2max purely from the ratio between maximum heart rate and resting heart rate, with no exertion required. Max HR is itself estimated with the Tanaka formula (208 − 0.7 × age), already used in our target heart rate calculator. A lower resting HR (often a sign of good cardiovascular fitness) mechanically raises the estimated VO2max, for the same max HR — that's the very principle behind this method.

Is this estimate as reliable as a lab test?
No. The study behind this formula was conducted on trained men aged 21 to 51, and its own authors note it may not generalize as precisely to other profiles (women, untrained people, teenagers, older adults). It's a practical indicative estimate requiring no exertion, not a substitute for a lab measurement for elite athletic or medical use.
What benchmarks help interpret a VO2max result?
Normal values vary enormously by age, sex, and training level: a sedentary adult often falls between 25 and 40 mL/kg/min, a regular exerciser between 40 and 50, and an elite endurance athlete can exceed 60 to 70 mL/kg/min. These benchmarks remain general: mainly compare your own result over time rather than against an absolute standard.
How do I improve my VO2max?
Regular cardiovascular training, particularly high-intensity interval training and base endurance work, are the best-documented methods for improving VO2max over several weeks to months. This calculator measures a snapshot in time, not a trend: redo the calculation periodically (resting HR included) to track how it changes.
