Explanation
The Cooper test, developed in 1968 by American physician Kenneth H. Cooper for the U.S. Air Force, involves covering the greatest possible distance in 12 minutes of running, then converting that distance into an estimated VO2max (maximal oxygen consumption, expressed in milliliters of oxygen consumed per kilogram of body weight per minute) — a reference indicator of cardiorespiratory fitness under exertion. It's one of the oldest and most widely used field tests in the world, valued for its simplicity (no equipment needed beyond a measured track and a stopwatch) despite being less accurate than a direct lab measurement (through expired gas analysis). As very rough general benchmarks for an adult, a VO2max around 35-40 mL/kg/min corresponds to average fitness, while elite-level runners exceed 60 to 70 mL/kg/min, or even more for some elite endurance athletes.

Why does the Cooper test last 12 minutes rather than 6 like the half-Cooper?
The original Cooper test was specifically designed to estimate VO2max, a quantity that reflects the maximum capacity to use oxygen over a longer sustained effort. The half-Cooper (6 minutes), being shorter, stays within the time window where maximal aerobic speed (MAS) can be fully sustained, making it a better tool for specifically estimating MAS rather than VO2max — the two tests therefore serve slightly different purposes despite sharing a common principle.
Is this estimate as accurate as a lab measurement?
No, a direct VO2max measurement in a lab (through expired gas analysis during a progressive effort on a treadmill or bike) remains the most accurate reference. The Cooper test, like any field test, depends heavily on the runner's motivation and ability to pace their effort well over the full duration, and remains an estimate, not a direct physiological measurement.
Do I need to be in particular physical condition to take this test?
