This calculator shows a range rather than a single figure, since it is an estimate: actual energy expenditure varies between people beyond what these formulas can capture.

Explanation

This calculator estimates two distinct things. First, the basal metabolic rate (BMR): the energy your body spends at complete rest, for its vital functions, before any activity. It is calculated here using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation (1990), now more widely recommended than the older Harris-Benedict equation for the general adult population. Second, this basal metabolic rate is multiplied by a factor reflecting your usual physical activity level to estimate your total daily energy expenditure. The result is shown as a range (± 10%) because no formula perfectly captures individual differences in metabolism. Important: this calculator estimates only your maintenance energy expenditure — it does not calculate or suggest any weight-loss or weight-gain target. No, and deliberately so: this calculator only estimates your maintenance energy expenditure (the number of calories that, in theory, keeps your weight stable). A suitable calorie deficit or surplus depends on many individual factors (medical history, relationship with food, realistic goals) that an online calculator cannot assess — this is a question to discuss with a doctor or registered dietitian.

Why a range instead of a precise figure?

Because a single figure would give a false impression of precision. Basal metabolic rate equations like Mifflin-St Jeor are statistical averages: they come close to reality for most people, but can sometimes diverge noticeably for a given individual, depending on factors (muscle mass, genetics, health status, medication) that an online calculator does not measure.

Is this estimate valid during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
