Calories from macronutrients are calculated with: (protein × 4) + (carbs × 4) + (fat × 9), in grams. For 30 g of protein, 50 g of carbs, and 10 g of fat, this gives 410 kcal.

Explanation

Each macronutrient provides a different number of calories per gram, known as the Atwater factors: 4 kilocalories per gram of protein, 4 kcal/g for carbohydrates, and 9 kcal/g for fat — more than double, which explains why fat-rich foods are more calorie-dense for the same weight. This calculator simply adds up the calories contributed by each macronutrient entered; it doesn't cover dietary fiber (about 2 kcal/g, often counted separately) or alcohol (7 kcal/g). This calculation is purely descriptive: it converts grams into calories without making any recommendation or setting a target. Why does fat provide more calories than protein or carbs?

Fat is chemically denser in energy: its molecular structure contains more carbon-hydrogen bonds per gram than protein or carbohydrates, which releases more energy when metabolized — hence the factor of 9 kcal/g versus 4 kcal/g for the other two.

Does this calculation include fiber and alcohol?

No, this calculator is limited to the three main macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, fat). Dietary fiber (about 2 kcal/g) is sometimes counted separately within total carbohydrates on nutrition labels, and alcohol (7 kcal/g) is not a macronutrient covered here.
