Total blood volume is estimated from height, weight, and sex using the Nadler formula. For a man who is 180 cm tall and weighs 80 kg, the estimated blood volume is about 5.32 L (5,319 mL).
Explanation
Total blood volume (also called blood volemia) can't be simply measured in a healthy individual — estimating it by calculation is therefore the common approach in clinical practice, particularly to assess acceptable blood loss before surgery or to size a transfusion. The Nadler formula (1962), the most widely used, combines height (cubed, converted to meters) and weight using distinct coefficients for men and women, the latter reflecting average differences in body composition (lean mass proportion, generally higher in men, since blood tissue is proportionally more abundant in lean tissue than in fat tissue). An adult of average build generally has a total blood volume between 4.5 and 5.5 liters, or about 7 to 8% of total body weight — a useful benchmark to check the plausibility of the result obtained, to compare against your BMI if you're trying to place your own body size in context. This estimate remains theoretical: the formula was established on a sample of adults of standard weight and build, and its accuracy decreases in people with significant obesity or an atypical build (see also our body surface area calculator, which uses the same estimation principle from height and weight).

Frequently asked questions
Is blood volume the same for everyone?
No: it mainly depends on height, weight, and sex. A taller or heavier adult generally has a larger blood volume, and men have on average a slightly higher blood volume than women of the same height and weight, due to a generally higher lean mass proportion.
Why use the Nadler formula rather than a fixed percentage of body weight?
A quick estimate (about 7 to 8% of body weight) exists, but it's less precise than a formula combining height and weight: two people of the same weight but very different heights don't have the same blood volume. The Nadler formula, by incorporating both measurements, remains the most widely used reference in medicine since its publication in 1962.
What's the point of knowing your total blood volume?
In a medical setting, this estimate is used to assess acceptable blood loss during a surgical procedure, to size a transfusion, or to calculate certain drug dosages. For personal use, it remains primarily informative and doesn't replace any medical measurement or decision.
